My mom had a garden when I was growing up and my favorite time of the year was when the peas and carrots were ready. My little brother and I would carefully tip-toe our way through the cucumbers and pumpkins and pull the carrots out and fill our pockets with peapods. Then, we would carefully tip-toe back out of the garden, wash the carrots in a bucket of water by the house and sit on the back porch eating our spoils before our mom caught us. Even now, when I smell a fresh carrot, it reminds of those times.

For me, gardening is relaxing and gives me a sense of accomplishment at the end of a busy week. In my busy work schedule, for example, I often finish a long, busy work day but still have the sense that I haven’t actually accomplished anything useful. To me, gardening is both useful and gives me the sense that I have accomplished something of significance – especially when I have a basketful of fresh tomatoes for dinner, or a pumpkin pie made from my own pumpkin.

You don’t need to be a green thumb or a seasoned gardener to grow a backyard garden. Some people think that it must be complicated and only people with a botany degree could possibly pull it off successfully. Not so, my friends. I can honestly tell you that I often don’t know the proper name of some of the plants that I grow. I don’t attend gardener’s workshops or take tea with the local horticultural society. Who has time for all of that these days? I learn as I go and if I don’t know, I use the internet as a wonderful source of up-to-date information. One of my friends once told me, “I can’t grow a garden. I kill all the plants in my house so how can I possibly keep a garden going?”

Nobody is perfect, but anyone can grow a garden. I consider myself a pretty decent gardener and, throughout the years, some of my plants have died – for various reasons. Even the most skilled and expert gardener can’t make every plant grow.

Some of my neighbors think that gardening requires a lot of maintenance and is a lot of back-breaking work. They often peek over my fence, give me one of their “oh you poor thing” looks and say, “I don’t know where you find the time and energy for this.” Gardening does take some time and it can burn some calories, too. In fact, I think one study found that you can burn over 300 calories in just one hour of gardening. All that bending, digging, lifting, walking and pulling can really work those muscles. The great thing is, if you enjoy what you are doing, it won’t seem like work at all and you will be getting healthier in the bargain. Plus, I’ll show you some helpful tips to greatly reduce the amount of physical labor and maintenance your garden will require.

Gardening is really quite simple if you remember a few simple rules (which I will show you) and take a little time to understand your local climate and the needs of the plants that you plan to grow. Once you have that knowledge behind you, you will be well on your way to your own beautiful backyard garden. The improved health and quality of life you receive from being a gardener makes it clear why gardening is one of the world's most popular hobbies.

WOW great book EZ read well organized.

My first crop was outstanding.. Planning on expanding now that I retired. During WW II 45% of veggies were backyard garden grown. My goal is to grow half or more of the veggies my family consumes. Home grown veggies taste better. Going back to the my childhood gardening with Grandpa complete with a water harvest plan and compost bin.

Gives me a purpose
Super helpful to the new gardener! I especially appreciated the simple suggested test to determine what type of soil you have. I've rented a spot in a community garden, and this type of information is so helpful! I also appreciate the recipe for homemade anti-beetle spray, and the advice not to go into the garden to harvest right after a rainstorm, to avoid damaging the plants. I never would have considered that, and very much appreciate those kind of insights!
love it
Gardening is a way to cut your grocery bill in the summer. You can freeze beans and other vegetables. Or can. Either way you get fresh and you can know exactly what you are eating.
VERY INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE,, GAVE ME LOTS OF NEW IDEAS! I WOULD DEFINITELY REFER MY FRIENDS TO THIS BOOK FOR THEIR INTEREST IN A SMALL GARDEN WHEN YOU HAVE LIMITED SPACE.
